History of the Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu from Soke Phillip
A Foreword from Soke Don L. Phillip
The first Martial Art I studied was Judo in 1958. I learned Judo from a friend of mine who learned Judo while stationed in Japan. I practiced Judo from 1958 to 1962.
In 1963 in Omaha Nebraska I learned Tae Kwon Do.In 1964 to 1965 I was introduced to Shotokan Karate Do and the Martial Art of Aikido while living in Rockford Illinois During my service in the United States Navy while stationed in Charleston Sourh Carolina in 1967, I began my study of the Martial Art of Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu. Upon his return from Japan, I met Shihan Albert Curtis Church Jr. In 1969. This wonderful man taught me more about the Martial Arts than anyone. I trained at the Hombu Dojo every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday Morning from 1968 to 1973 becoming the Hombu Instructor in the Jujutsu Martial Art under Soke Albert Church.
I did study the Hard Fist as Soke Church called the Karate and Kempo Martial Arts as well but my primary Love was the Jujutsu Martial Arts. I developed a close friendship with Al Church during this time, after class we would talk about many things that Al had experienced throughout his life both personal and professional.
In 1973 I moved to Longmont Colorado teaching here as well as traveling and working throughout the United States.During my time away from the Hombu Dojo, I trained and met many prominent Martial Art Insructors such as Professor Wally Jay 10th Dan Small Circle Jujitsu, Professor Jim Dohan a student of Professor Ed Parker and Professor Wally Jay. When I was working in California, met Professor Rick Alemany and Professor Duke Moore.
I would call Soke Church on the phone speaking frequently with him discussing life events and Martial Arts.
In 1975 I returned to the Hombu Dojo and was taught the Okuden Shihan Training by Soke Church. At this time I was also named a Soke Dai of the Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu.
In 1977 I lived in Colorado where I taught Kamishin Ryu at three Martial Art schools in Loveland, Greeley and Fort Collins Colorado. I shared and trained with other Martial Artists, namely, Professor Robert Austin, Hanshi Ron Carlson, Lao Shr Wayne Welsh, Guru Daniel Prasetya, Professor Martin Castro, Sensei James Denning, Sensei Ed Alexander, Master Jerry Davis, Master Bob Orlando and Sensei Fred Rockenbach.
In 1979 Soke Albert Church reorganized the Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu system into One Combined Seiken Fist System. He eliminated the different Ryugi instead forming only One Martial Art System. He removed all the Soke Dai's Titles of the different Ryugi in a Typed, Signed Letter dated January 28th,1979. On January 31, 1979 he only restored One Soke Dai position to myself in a hand written letter. Unfortunately Soke Church died suddenly in 1980.
I Inherited all of Soke Church's Files, Records and Documents when Catherine Church formally named me the next Soke and Inheritor of the Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu.
The Zen Kamishin Kai Manual is the Only Official Authorized Manual for Soke Church's Inherited Martial Art. Often referred to as "Kamishin". The Next Generation of Kamishin Ryu students carry on teaching the Techniques of Soke Church. Namely Soke Dai Scott Phillip, Shihan Ed Alexander, Shihan Lloyd Allum, Shihan Louis Mang, Shihan Wesley Smith, Shihan Dai Chuck Traylor, Shihan Dai Tim Torrez, Shihan Dai Christine Torrez, Shihan Dai Geoff Thompson and Shihan Dai Philip Jauch and Sensei Neil and Sensei Carissa Morris. My thanks to these students who have chosen to carry on the Teachings of The Shorinji Tetsuken Do Kanda Ha Kamishin Ryu.
